The Movement to Save TikTok
It isn't fair that the House of representatives approved a bill to essentially force TikTok to sell the US subsidiary of the company to a government approved owner. Basically the US government wants to control all of social media. TikTik users and creators are caught in the middle and are the ones that will suffer should the draconian bill pass the Senate and then gets signed into law by President Biden. Abi Lorrel is championing a movement including a TikTok dance challenge to help change the government's approach to the problem. There are other solutions available to both the US government and the owners of TikTok. Let's help the two sides find common middle ground solutions.
Abi Lorrel was born in a repressive country named Belarus. She knows how difficult it is to survive in a system that is designed to oppress its people. Banning things reminds her of what is bad in this world. When she heard that the US government was trying to Ban TikTok it sent shivers through her soul. Abi is a patriot of her newly adopted homeland. She has served in the US military and become a US citizen. She graduated from Columbia University and wants to be a great contributor to American society. But she understands what can go wrong with Democracy. Her parents still live in Belarus.
TikTok was already forced to place their computer servers in Texas under the direct supervision of Oracle, Inc. It is disingenuous of our government to now demand that the owners of TikTok sell their company under duress and through a fire sale. We must acknowledge both sides of the argument and make informed decisions. Here is my informed opinion. TikTok is a Chinese owned company and they can theoretically manipulate their algorithms to benefit the communist Chinese party. But Oracle would immediately see such subterfuge immediately. Therefore the idea that TikTok must be sold to a US based entity is not reasonable. This action will permit China to begin forcing American companies to sell their entities in China. An economic war would bloom and US and Chinese citizens would suffer. Why not just ask the TikTok ownership to provide greater transparency as it writes the code for their algorithms. In fact, all social media companies should submit to this type of transparency. A government oversight board of expert technologists can easily be formed to accomplish this goal. Let's tell our local Senators and Congress people that Banning TikTok is unfair and UnAmerican! Don't Ban TikTok. Please buy some of my tee shirts so I can spread the message.
